Interview with Kate Smith from CBRE
Q) What, in your view, makes an entry truly stand out?
A) The entries that stop me in my tracks are the ones that go beyond a list of achievements and tell a real story. Anyone can outline a successful project or a promotion — what I'm looking for is the journey behind it. The obstacles faced, the decisions made under pressure, the moments of doubt overcome. When someone allows themselves to be genuinely seen on the page, that's when an entry becomes truly compelling. Authenticity is everything. Don't polish away the hard parts — those are often what make your story extraordinary.
But a great entry is also a complete one. The strongest submissions demonstrate how they’ve met the award criteria, are backed by evidence — data, statistics, and tangible results that show the real scale of someone's impact. And they don't stand alone. Colleague endorsements, supporting materials, testimonials from peers or mentors — these add depth and credibility that transforms a good entry into an exceptional one. The strongest entries do both — they win hearts with their story, and minds with their evidence.
Q) Why do you think awards like this are important for the industry?
A) Representation shapes possibility. When women across the property sector see others like them being celebrated — genuinely recognised for their brilliance — it shifts something. It tells the next generation that there is a place for them here, and that their ambition is not too much. These awards matter because visibility matters. When women make up just a quarter of board positions in this sector — and the pay gap in real estate still sits at 12.6% — visibility isn’t a nice-to-have. It’s a necessity. Every name on that shortlist is a signal to a woman at any stage of her career that she belongs in this industry, that her contributions count, and that her story is worth telling. That ripple effect is profound — and it’s why I’m proud to be part of it.
